The J. M. Murray Center operates a work center that provides vocational training, pre-vocational services, sheltered employment and community placement for individuals with disabilities.
Your association with the Murray Center can provide you with an opportunity to learn about different jobs and develop the work habits and skills necessary to succeed in today‘s workplace. Our highly qualified staff can provide you with hands-on vocational training in an area that interests you while you learn new skills and earn money.
Work opportunities are available in occupations such as assembly and packaging, manufacturing of commodities, food service and material handling. Our staff will provide you with support and assistance as you achieve your vocational goals.
Continue your vocational training for as long as you need through sheltered employment. If you decide to pursue gainful employment within the community, The EMPLOYMENT Connection office can provide the support and service for you to succeed.
Who May Apply
Individuals with a disability that want to gain an understanding of their work skills, strengths and preferences while working with vocational rehabilitation staff in identifying and achieving vocational goals.
The Types of Services Offered:
Evaluation (DVE) - A short-term assessment period to identify your individual vocational skills, aptitudes, abilities and interests.
Vocational Adjustment – Training in areas related to employment success. Includes work assignment to various types of activities, counseling and case management to assist in problem solving and skill development.
Work Experience for Students – Students may be referred through their school district to participate in work activities at the Murray Center as they transition to the world of work. As they prepare to graduate, their work schedule and repertoire of work assignments may be increased.
Counseling – Vocational rehabilitation staff assist you with vocational exploration, goal setting, problem solving and decision making.
Community Employment – Everyone has the potential to pursue employment in other settings. We encourage you to explore community-based employment and will provide the support and service for you to be successful.
Long Term Sheltered Employment – This is an option for individuals who benefit from the ongoing structure and support to maintain a job at the Murray Center. Vocational counseling, case management and instruction help you continue to enhance your work skills.
Prevocational Services
This service is available for individual’s who may need additional support in order to maintain their vocational training. Personal care needs, cafeteria assistance, mobility and improving work skills are examples of the types of service available.
How to Make it Happen
Call for a Tour – Come and see what work environments are available. Call 607/756-9913 and ask to speak with a Vocational Rehabilitation Counselor.
Complete an Application from a Funding Program – VESID and the Commission for the Blind and Visually Handicapped sponsor most services we offer. We can help you access these referral sources.
Complete Our Application Packet –
- Application for vocational services.
- Documentation of your disability (by a clinician).
- TB Test within the past 12 months.
- Two forms of identification.
- Physical/functional capacity form from a physician identifying any work restrictions.
- A signed release of information form.
Outcomes & Objectives – Once information is compiled, an intake meeting will be scheduled to establish vocational and rehabilitation goals, desired work site, transportation and schedule.
Other Information
Hours of Operation – The hours of operation vary depending on your work assignment. Generally, hours are Monday through Friday 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. We occasionally offer extended hours due to production demands.
Transportation – Local public transportation is available through Cortland Transit. The Murray Center also contracts with a vendor to provide transportation to people who live outside of the Cortland Transit route area or who are unable to ride public transportation. You may opt to use payroll deduction to purchase a monthly bus pass.
