Fighting Scams through Education
The J. M. Murray Center, Inc. was awarded a grant to develop
programming to equip individuals with disabilities with
the skills and resources to recognize and prevent being
scammed by predatory marketing tactics. Sponsored by the
National Endowment for Financial Education (NEFE), SCAM
Busters (acronym for Stop, Calculate the Cost, Ask Questions,
Mind your money) includes a humorous video depicting scam
scenarios, a training and resource manual, and promotional
reminders. The project aims to improve the level of scam
awareness among individuals who watch the SCAM Busters video
and to encourage those confronted with a potential scam
to seek assistance from trustworthy sources.
“Individuals with disabilities, especially those
with cognitive disabilities, are common targets of financial
scams. We believe prevention starts with education and
this grant will enable us to educate in a creative, effective
way,” stated Judy O’Brien, Director of Vocational
Rehabilitation/Employment at the Murray Center.
The program focuses on common financial scams and includes
