Building Confidence Through Work
Most people who know Lawrence “Larry” Podoluk notice one thing right away—Larry loves to talk. It’s one of his most endearing qualities. Whether he’s greeting customers, chatting with coworkers, or sharing stories about his latest adventure, Larry brings warmth, humor, and enthusiasm wherever he goes.
In 2018, at age 57, Larry decided he wanted more out of his day-to-day life. After participating in Unity House’s Day Habilitation and Pathway to Employment programs, he knew he wanted to earn his own money, be more independent, and try something new. Although early assessments suggested he might not yet be ready for competitive employment, Larry wasn’t discouraged. Instead, he continued building skills through JM Murray’s site-based and community-based pre-vocational services.
From the start, staff were impressed by Larry’s motivation, strong work ethic, and attention to detail. He thrived in community-based volunteer roles—especially those that allowed him to work outdoors—and even continued volunteering when his regular programs resumed. In April 2021, Larry officially enrolled in community-based pre-vocational services and quickly became a “go-to” participant: reliable, enthusiastic, and always ready to step up.
One of the businesses where Larry frequently volunteered was Tractor Supply Company. His dedication didn’t go unnoticed. In November 2021, the store manager encouraged him to apply for a position, and with support from JM Murray’s Employment Connection staff, Larry was hired as a store associate in December 2021.
Today, Larry works 12–15 hours per week at Tractor Supply. He helps customers find products, loads purchases into vehicles, and keeps the store clean and organized. Regular customers know him as a friendly, dependable presence. “I always greet customers and ask how they’re doing,” Larry says. His co-workers value him, and Larry takes pride in being reliable—often reminding his team, “If you need me, call me, and I’ll come in.”
Outside of work, Larry fully embraces his independence. He lives in a supported apartment, and with that independence has come confidence—and adventure. Fishing is his greatest passion, especially bass fishing for “the fight they put up.” He spends time at Dryden Lake and enjoys hunting for old fishing lures at Durkee Park. Larry also plays golf, bowls, and has proudly competed in Special Olympics bowling and softball. He loves to travel, too—whether it’s visiting Fenway Park, exploring Cooperstown, or trying horseback riding for the first time.
Larry has a mild intellectual disability and an anxiety disorder. Once held back by debilitating anxiety, he now moves through the world with confidence and determination. He does not let his disabilities define him.
Support has played an important role in his success. Larry values his relationship with his JM Murray employment coach, Erinn Seward, who helps him advocate for himself, ask for help when needed, and navigate challenges with confidence. That support continues to make a meaningful difference.
After losing nearly all of his immediate family, holidays were once especially difficult for Larry. Over time, he found a surrogate family through work. His supervisor, Jacki, regularly invites Larry to her home for holidays, ensuring he feels included, valued, and supported.
Larry’s story is one of perseverance, independence, and joy. Whether he’s helping customers, casting a line, or planning his next adventure, Larry approaches life with heart and determination.
Stories like Larry’s reflect the heart of JM Murray’s Employment Connection program — helping people of all abilities discover meaningful work, while connecting local employers with dedicated, talented individuals who bring value to their teams. Since 1966, Employment Connection has proudly supported inclusive workplaces that recognize talent, create opportunity, and help people — and businesses — thrive together.
