Last May, Makenzie Rogers joined JM Murray as a Community Support Professional. Although she is new to the field, she leads with a confidence and compassion that feel far beyond her years. She has an instinctive ability to connect with the people she supports, meeting them where they are and helping them grow in ways that are meaningful for them.
Makenzie takes the time to truly understand each person’s interests and goals. When one individual expressed a love of gardening, she didn’t just suggest an activity — she helped them find a volunteer opportunity tending a garden at a local church. That experience became more than a pastime; it gave the individual a sense of purpose, belonging, and pride. Moments like this reflect Makenzie’s belief that the people she supports should shape their own lives and she is there to be an advocate and guide.
Her relationships are built on trust. When an individual opened up to her about personal mental health struggles, Makenzie responded with patience and empathy. She sought out coping strategies that matched the individual’s personality and worked with them to practice healthier responses to stress. Her steady, reassuring presence has become a source of comfort and stability in that person’s daily life.
Even as a newcomer, Makenzie shows natural leadership. She communicates consistently with residential staff to ensure continuity of care, especially around dietary needs that are important to an individual she supports. She understands that small details — like honoring beverage preferences during service time — matter deeply, and she works to make sure every team member is aligned. Her advocacy ensures dignity, consistency, and respect.
Makenzie also demonstrates creativity in moments that require flexibility. On a day when an individual felt overwhelmed and unable to make decisions, she adjusted their plans to create a calm, supportive environment and redirected the day toward volunteering at the Cortland SPCA — an activity that helped regulate their emotions and restore their confidence. She later used the experience as a teaching moment, helping the individual reflect on positive outlets for frustration. Her ability to adapt in real time shows thoughtful, innovative support centered on emotional well-being and long-term growth.
While Makenzie was not selected to be one of ANCOR‘s (American Network of Community Options and Resources) award recipients, being nominated from a pool of 550 DSPs nationwide is itself a remarkable honor.
We are so incredibly proud of Makenzie for the exceptional care, creativity, and heart she brings to her work every single day. She is a shining example of everything a Direct Support Professional can and should be, and this recognition is a testament to the profound difference she is already making in the lives of those she supports. JM Murray is truly fortunate to have her on our team, and we cannot wait to see all that she continues to accomplish.
